NO STOP http://nostop.ildella.net Open way and Web evolution posterous.com Thu, 14 Jul 2011 08:13:00 -0700 Google Plus: seriously? http://nostop.ildella.net/google-plus-seriously http://nostop.ildella.net/google-plus-seriously

I use Gmail since years. So Google Contacts is the base for all my contacts.

I have groups in Google Contacts. Family, Friends, Work, Coworker. Yes, I've made circles, I use them since years, like millions of others. Without any Google Plus and all the fanfare.

No, it's not like the late 90s and search. At that time they did not clone Altavista, they did reinvent the Search. If I go to Google Plus now, it's a damned Facebook clone which is now itself a mixed up thing somewhere between what Facebook was and Twitter and Friendfeed. A clone of a clone. With circles. That are the very same basic plain groups feature of every damned contact manager since the beginning of the time. You can call them circles, but they are groups. They are there to be managed. It's boring. It's the most boring thing in the world.

A Facebook clone with the circles, that's what they released. That do not even import my Google Contacts groups.
I was expecting AT LEAST that circles would emerge automatically and some fancy circle related features. But no.
It's worst than worst: it does not even import my already existent groups. Pardon, circles.

Bah.

Sun, 28 Nov 2010 16:00:00 -0800 New Elementary look fror my Ubuntu Maverick Desktop http://nostop.ildella.net/34790686 http://nostop.ildella.net/34790686

Ubuntu-elementary-2

This beautiful and clean look comes with Elementary theme and icons, the Elementary Nautilus variant, which allow to remove menu and introduce some cleanup in the file browser, and the Hide Menu extension for Firefox.

Let's start with Elementary theme: what is needed is to install Elementary and then choose the theme in System | Preferences | Appeareance.

There are two ways to install the theme:

The easy way:

From a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementaryart/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install elementary-icon-theme elementary-theme elementary-wallpapers

To get the terminal, press CTRL+ALT+T or launch it from the Application menu, Accessories.

The hard way:

From Applications menu, choos Software Sources.

Now fro the menu, Edit | Software Sources

Now choose the Other Software tab, press add and finally insert:

ppa:elementaryart/ppa

Now after reloading the sources, elementary theme, icons and wallpapers will be available.

In the end

Just choose the theme from the System | Preferences | Appeareance

 Elementary Nautilus Variant

Same way as before, here is the code for the plain

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

This means the repository to add is: ppa:am-monkeyd/nautilus-elementary-ppa and there is nothing to install, just perform a regular system update and upgrade.

Remove Firefox Menu

With this extension and live happy.

Wed, 06 Oct 2010 05:38:46 -0700 Pay, get paid and keep track of everything with Expensify and Freshbooks http://nostop.ildella.net/pay-get-paid-and-keep-track-of-everything-wit http://nostop.ildella.net/pay-get-paid-and-keep-track-of-everything-wit As my business and my overall understanding of "how thing works" grows, I can make serious choices about the right tool to simplify my work life.
This morning was the case of expenses report and keep track of clients, projects and billable activity with automatic invoice generation.

My choice falls on Expensify for the first problem and Freshbook for the second. Expensify features a Freshbooks and Google Apps integration, that's a great plus. Both have mobile apps for Android.

Expensify will keep track of all the expenses in a fashioned modern way. I can take a picture of any receipt and send it to Expensify with the mobile app and everything gets archived and ready for my accountant. Expensify has his own android app by the way and is set up in minutes. I just could not complete the credit card import (couldn't find Visa) and Google App connection. Anyway, the support team already contected me, as a new customer, and I'm sure they will sort those issue out for me soon.

Freshbooks is a light project manager with a nice, simple and modern interface: is super easy to create clients, projects, task and send a new invoice with the billed hours to the client. It does not add entropy to your process but offer a nice and compact way of what is going on in your company. There are different mobile apps, I chose TimeDroid, which offer a free and a cheap pro version.

I already knew about those product, so I did not have to research. It took me just a few hours to set up everything and be ready to work with both services, integrated and with mobile version set up.

Now I can start to do some actual work and spend some money!

Wed, 29 Sep 2010 12:06:43 -0700 Unsatisfied Nvidia customer http://nostop.ildella.net/unsatisfied-nvidia-customer http://nostop.ildella.net/unsatisfied-nvidia-customer Now there is a reason for why I do not like nvidia anymore.

I had a Dell XPS laptop since February of 2008, with an NVidia graphic
accelerator that is more powerful than my needs, given I do not need
the laptop for gaming or other graphic intensive applications.

During these years the computer was some time really slow due to real
inadequate Linux graphic drivers that Nvidia provides.
The GPU control was inefficient so often it works at maximum clock
when not needed, causing the GPU to heat too much causing degradation
of performance and of course, the laptop to be hot. This happens
randomly across different driver version. But it happens always when
the laptop was connected to an external monitor.
One way or another, sometimes they worked fine enough for me but
always under the expectations.

In the last month the heat problem occur more often so today, having
the CPU constantly over 80 Celsius, I decided to try the new beta
driver, 260 series. Now, the performance improvement is sensible and
the Nvidia Powermizer is working so clock is at minimum and GPU
temperature down around 70 Celsius.

Now why should I hate Nvidia? I should be happy because today I have a
almost brand new laptop with all the graphic going smoother than ever
and the cool GPU.

But today I just bought a new laptop. Not only for the GPU problem
reason but also because my laptop performance were not enough fore me
anymore. Now they do not seem so bad after all.

By the way, I bought a Dell, again, due to their great customer
support in Italy. But I did not choose the nvidia card. I'll stay with
integrated Intel card.

NVidia, today I hate you.

Tue, 28 Sep 2010 07:08:00 -0700 Lightweight project management web tool http://nostop.ildella.net/lightweight-project-management-web-tool http://nostop.ildella.net/lightweight-project-management-web-tool

Ok I am searchiing for something like this since a lot. This spring I evaluated three tool, Huddle, Deskaway and another one I do not remember but they did not fulfill my very basic needs.

Since then on my Diigo page under "project management" there are six new tools, and I discover another couple today.
Now let's make it quick, I do not need much. I'd like a light task management and some sort of topic-centered conversation flow. Single project is ok, I can always open a new account or space for another project.

1. For light task management I mean  "one line/one click" task creation, assign/involve people with a twitter like syntax "Hey @jonny what do you think about this matter here?"
2. For topic-centered conversation flow I mean I need some categories/tags, some "flow marker" like "engeineering" or "analytics" or "business development" and so on with any kind of object attached (links, email conversation, docs, events, maps...)

I think this can be described just as Twitter along with its List and Search and Mentions, with a very simple and plain task lifecycle management in addition.

I now have to try teambox.com, shareflow.com, theflowr.com, wedoist.com, kohive.com, skylightit.com
Anyone want to help? :)

pollici oramai.

Sto chiedendo cosi' tanto?

Cosi dovrebbe funzionare. Non sto chiedendo tanto.

Tue, 07 Sep 2010 09:15:00 -0700 Gnome Shell on Ubuntu Maverick beta http://nostop.ildella.net/gnome-shell-on-ubuntu-maverick-beta http://nostop.ildella.net/gnome-shell-on-ubuntu-maverick-beta

I just upgraded my system to Ubuntu Maverick, that will become Ubuntu
10.10 in october. While it will ship with the default window manager,
Gnome Shell is available from official repository so is super easy to
install it from the Software Center.

Gnome Shell is the next generation window manager and you can see here
two screenshot. Pressing the SUPER button (or, sic, the windows
button..) you can access the "Activities" view. This view is
activable also going to the top-left of the screen with the mouse
pointer.

On the top left there is the search field: writing there you look for
the applications. Or you can press the "applications" button to
explode them all (last screenshot). Under those elements, always on
the left, there are the open applications, some notable folders and
disks and the recent documents.
The center of the screen is the actual desktop, which is temporary
reduced reduced to left space to the activities pane and to the area
to switch from one desktop to another, at the bottom.

The second shot shows the desktop in it's normal size, which has just
a black bar at the top. Let's dig into the top bar. "Activities" show
the activities view we just talked about. Then there is the logo and
title of the actually open window, that is no more on the application
bar. Then the clock on the center and on the right the system tray
that is showing: tweetdeck, skype, tomboy notes, the Empathy multi
chat instant messanger, the wifi connection and the system menu.

Please also note that the opened application is the last nightly build

of Firefox 4, feafuring tabs on top, the four button interface (back,
forward, stop/reload, home), the search box and the location field on
the right and the button to toggle the tab sets view on the very right
of the tabs.

Great stuff. The gnome shell is great in functionality, polished and
faster compared to Compiz, at least in perceived smoothness of the
user interface.

To activate the gnome shell window manager in Ubuntu Maverick, just
install it from the Software Center and run "gnome-shell --replace"
from the command runner, that is activated with ALT-F2.
Ah, the command runner in gnome shell is amazing, what I always dreamed.

From now on Gnome Shell is my default window manager.

Fri, 30 Apr 2010 05:24:00 -0700 Caro Jobs http://nostop.ildella.net/caro-jobs http://nostop.ildella.net/caro-jobs

Media_httpimagesaskme_jquzj

Certo, avete fatto WebKit.

Be'...

Ubuntu-desktio-10-04

Cosa e' Ubuntu?

Ummm, risposta strana, sei sicuro?

No.

Sun, 14 Feb 2010 07:05:00 -0800 Jinni, Flattr and Aardvark http://nostop.ildella.net/jinni-flattr-and-aardvark http://nostop.ildella.net/jinni-flattr-and-aardvark

One of my best long term prediction, last April, was: soon people will stop asking Google and will just start asking "Twitter". I say twitter to mean "the crowd", the people out there. I continue to procrastinate my article about what I called "unfriendly" social network, which is not proper definition but I think it makes the point.

Anyway, Aardvark launched private beta one year ago, is basically this concept: ask a question, someone out there will answer. Well, my idea is that "someone or something will answer" but it will take sometime before search engines will be nothing more than a Twitter account. For now Aardvark just forward your question to other people that claimed to be able to answer to a specific topic. You can browse the site looking for question to answer. Sometimes, if you like, Aardvark will contact you on your chat to ask questions. Sounds annoying? Well, it is not, and if sometime you can help someone else, you get satisfied.
By the way, few days ago Aardvark has been acquired by Google, so this scenario is what we can expect: best developer will go away, site will receive no more further development and Aardvark will die :) But people that will leave aardvark will create a new startup with Google money, so Google will have a new startup to buy from them two years from now.

Jinni is an interesting relatively new service, basically a Pandora for movies, with a "Movie Genome" classification behind the hood. When you do not know what movie to see, yo go there and browse by mood, plot, period and so on. Maybe does not seem so interesting described this way but give him a quick try to understand potential. Like they just tweet about, try "unlikely couple" as a search. You will be surprised.

Flattr is the just announced micropayments system from Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde, with the ambitious plan to solve the problem to pay artist for their work in a shared and sustainable way. We will see, there should also be some subtle implications in a a project like that but let's thing about it for some day. For now, watch the video and ask for invitation.

Sat, 30 Jan 2010 06:42:11 -0800 Oracle, Twitter and the Apple Junkies http://nostop.ildella.net/oracle-twitter-and-the-apple-junkies http://nostop.ildella.net/oracle-twitter-and-the-apple-junkies So what has changed? On January 27, at the same moment, lot of people were sit in front of their laptop to see two very anticipated webcast: Apple and Oracle. Apple was to accounce its new Tablet, Oracle to define the new strategy after acquiring Sun. The most expected that Apple would have delivered at least a new World Wonder, and that Oracle would have practically buried Sun, cutting half of the employee.

Well, you know what was the biggest news? That during those two conferences, Twitter did not went down. Not for me at least. Ah, the good old times when just the idea that Jobs would have spoken was enough to destroy all the twitter guys effort.

So what are the minor news? That Apple delivered a thing they called iFat. Sorry, iPad, that is a fat iPod Touch.

People expected a fat iPhone but no, is a fat iPod. No phone. No camera. No USB. So what? Yes, the greatest touch screen on the market probably. And cool, as always. At least the most honest between Apple junkies say that no matter if it miss something, is useless or they dislike. If the price is affordable, they'll buy it anyway. By the way, affordable according to the Cupertino meaning of the term.

And Oracle? They basically said: we will not change anything. Fire 2000 employee only. They moved JavaOne from June to September. Wow, I am astonished. No disaster, after all :)

Tue, 26 Jan 2010 03:37:32 -0800 Web Trend 2010 http://nostop.ildella.net/web-trend-2010 http://nostop.ildella.net/web-trend-2010 I almost always waste chances to write my thoughts and visions about the Web and the future of Information Technology universe. From now on, I will talk without inhibition, at the risk to say nonsense. It is inevitable, so let's go.

Here we are, 2010 trend. I read a lot of bad ones. I throw my as well. Well actually I had this idea in middle of 2009 and in fact is already happening, is actually an old prediction.

To the point: the Main Trend of 2010 will be "local based/aware social applications". Is not just about geo-location everywhere, is that social app will attack local markets in new way, is a step for getting reconnected with the offline world, in the neverending convergence between the IT universe in large and the rest of the world.

Has something to do with Brightkite and Foursquare, for example, even if they "toys" for now. Local news, for example, will gain a lot of momentum. The great work US and UK government are doing about opening government and public administration data will launch lots of opportunities [1]. The widely adoption of powerful mobile devices will make easy for people to use and search local services where they are (yelp, google near me now...) and very few are now taking advantage of the possibilities of such systems.

Instead I do not think that, for example, "traditional" Social Shopping or Events application will gain many relevance this year. There are a lot of them but no one ever satisfied me.
The reason is mainly related to the lack of interoperability that the Web at large still suffer [2]. Data portability [3] will emerge as the primary industry need during this year and I think, and hope, that first good result will arrive in 2011, also as a consequence of the local base app trend. Cross network authentication (OpenID and oAuth) have been widely accepted and adopted in 2009, finally. This is just the beginning and the consequence of the great need to put end to the growing number of online service. Serious data portability and service interoperability is the next step.

I spoke :)

Next days I will talk about the "non friendly social network", the second main 2010 trend related to the way we will use social applications, I give a little roundup about new services  and finally the long awaited article (for me to write, I started last May): the "ask the fucking Twitter" emergence. Stay tuned and tell me what you think about my... ok, delirious :)

[3] Data Portability opened in late 2007 and during 2008 the most important software company did join. A lot of work still to do.

Mon, 25 Jan 2010 04:20:00 -0800 Google will you please... http://nostop.ildella.net/google-will-you-please http://nostop.ildella.net/google-will-you-please
Ok, Google is not working fine anymore since at leat a year. It is still the best tool for historical and consolidated research (well, you could just go for Wikipedia, sometimes...), but it is becoming always harder to find "up to date" content. As for now, I rely on twitter and feeds for the most. And I almost say "oh god" when I need to google something recent.

I lamented this problem a year ago. During 2009 Google introduced a couple of features: an option to filter depending on time, and the "Social Result". While I found the second useless to date, the first one is probably the only reason I keep using Google so much to search for recent and relevant content.

So, Google, will you please insert "Past Month" and "Past half year" link in the Options section? Most of the times I have to filter specifically and I am lazy. Writing month/year every time is annoying.

Screenshot1

Generally speaking, this "time filter" stuff is an admission of not being able to give useful content. Google is "asking the user", while we were just "asking the fucking Google" as a lifestyle for over a decade.

I know, the real time web and the Twitter-like way to move informations over the Net have stunned big G. The firm has become a Really Big Company, and now it is no more able to innovate. Google can just evolve, grow, buy, and sometimes kill the things just bought. Or make Big announcements that will eventually, six months later, show a "???" product. Yes, I am speaking about Wave.

In some meaning, Google is over, ladies and gentlemen. Like Microsoft in 2000.

At that time Redmond seemed  bigger and stronger than ever, but with the right kind of eyes you could see in advance what was going to happen. Sourceforge, Mozilla, Apache were just founded, and were giving birth to the Open Source movement. At that time they were being ignored, but after all the standard process we can all see the reality today.

Thanks to Google for the amplification, for sure. But history is taking its course. As for now Google can just ride the wave  (yep, the wave :D), hoping not to fall from the open source bandwagon that attracts so many developers. It is not dead as a company. As a matter of facts even Microsoft is not dead today. But it is already being replaced as the innovation driver of the market.

So here we are, at the very beginning of another inevitable cycle, when the old get reaped and replaced by the young. Just the never ending old history of Nature, isn't it?

By the way, they are around for a while, but not everyone knows. So as many ignore what is the actual level of a Ubuntu Desktop. Anyway, we have two choice and none of the two come enabled by default. Avant-Window-Navigator is the first that appeared during 2008 while Cairo Dock is the youngest one. I use Avant since a year or more and works fine. Cairo seems a little more shiny, I will give a try soon.

Anyway, get rid of the default bottom bar and use one of this two more useful and shiny dock bar.

hint: both applications are available through official Ubuntu software channels while instructions may guide you to use the dedicated channels to access newest version of the software. Your choice.

Thu, 17 Sep 2009 13:43:48 -0700 Personal aggregator, profile generator... whatever, I do not like you http://nostop.ildella.net/personal-aggregator-profile-generator-whateve http://nostop.ildella.net/personal-aggregator-profile-generator-whateve Yes, I don't. At least, what there is now on the scene and I am aware. Maybe I am missing the killer app, is so, someone please tell me.

Google Profile
is the Glory of Sadness
Arktan looks like a toy and despite the nice idea (I would have done the same) to put the nickname as a start... what the site offer more than a lifestream with some imported friend?
chip.mp is a good tool... looks more professional, you can import all contacts with oAuth from a lot of sites, and merge, and add... and in the end your home personal is a new lifestream.

So you say: WTFF? What The FriendFeed? Anyone is aware that I joined Friendfeed the 19th January 2008?

No no no. What I am looking like is something different, something fresh. Probably something that no one of those applications want even to achieve.

A personal page, NOT an aggregate of feeds
A page professional oriented, NOT a Facebook contender/clone
A page that looks interesting and attractive, NOT a toy, NOT a list of links to other pages.

I think that such a service should offer integration with as many other social network as possible and maybe show to the visitor *some* of the content that the owner produce. But NOT their whole damn lifestream. There is FriendFeed for that, or an RSS aggregator and probably tons of other way around the Net. Aggregation was THE thing of LAST year, not NEXT.

Have I to do that by myself? I have some ideas, I need a designer. Call for help!

Tue, 15 Sep 2009 05:37:41 -0700 Autopost: spread, not spam http://nostop.ildella.net/autopost-spread-not-spam http://nostop.ildella.net/autopost-spread-not-spam These days you easily get overwhelmed by the number of autopost you can setup to spread what you write on the web. Autopost on Twitter, import on FriendFeed and many times the first fire to the second... the result is too many notifications about what you write. This is more spam than spread :)

I am trying today a new strategy: FriendFeed is a far superior aggregator than twitter and in general, is a more powerful and versatile service. FriendFeed now allows a very fine grained autopost configuration on Twitter (as well as on mail, instant messanger and desktop notifier).

I used to post and autopost to twitter and import Twitter from FriendFeed, I changee my mind and now I do the opposite. This is better for at least these two reasons:

  • autopost to Friendfeed will produce a rich content, with pictures or audio, if contained in original post. If you arrive on FF via Twitter, the richness is lost
  • I can configure FriendFeed to post to Twitter also other content that it automatically inport, like the bookmark I share via diigo. Now these contents will arrive also on Twitter.
So this is the first post. I have configured FriendFeed to autopost some to Twitter of the contents I already import. Let's see what happens, if I made some mistakes, the neverending loop will destroy the Internet :)
